Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin just announced that the deadline for filing 2019 federal tax returns will move from April 15 to July 15.
It was previously announced that any taxes owed could be paid as late as July 15th without incurring any late payment penalties or interest. This announcement officially extends the filing deadline itself.
The secretary clarified that taxpayers could still file for refunds now, tweeting: "I encourage all taxpayers who may have refunds to file now to get your money."
